About Grassroots

We know that reading and writing can help people develop a huge range of other skills, which improve their lives in many ways. Whether it helps people cope with long-term illness, or simply to meet socially and build new contacts, reading and writing provides a great way for everyone, whatever their age or ability, to get together and make the most of their lives. The National Literacy Trust's 'Literacy Changes Lives: An Advocacy Resource' outlines these benefits in more detail.

We want to make sure that everyone can be given the chance to take part in creative reading or writing activities near them.  If you are an organiser who wants to bring reading and writing to your community you’ll know that you might have to pay to hire a venue, or for travel costs so that someone can come and talk to you, maybe have a visit from your favourite author or storyteller. These costs aren’t always easy to raise, and so many people miss out on opportunities that could have a lasting and positive   impact on their lives.

The Grassroots Literature programme provides awards of between £40 and £400 to help communities get involved with reading and writing, particularly in areas where funds might be hard to find, or events and projects are not already happening.

We’ve funded small festivals, library and school visits, author visits, reader group activities and writing workshops all over the South West. Take a look through our case studies to see the fantastic work that communities can do for themselves with a little support. We rely totally on our fundraising to help community groups get involved. If you are able to help us please click on the Donate button now and text us any amount up to £10. Every £1 you can give can make a big difference to someone’s life.
